Our Review
Topper’s Mountain is an innovative producer primarily focused on alternative varieties. Planting began in ‘00 with 15 rows each of 28 different varieties and clones, the intention being to find those that held the most promise. In the main, the team have found success with Italian and Iberian varieties such as nebbiolo and touriga, but it is the manseng that really sings. This high-acid botrytis-resistant white variety from southwest France was originally thought to be petit manseng when first planted, but DNA testing in ’20 found it to be actually gros manseng. -JAMES HALLIDAY
