Notes from the editor:
It feels like the start of a new year here at Halliday. Our Awards night is done and dusted, the winners well celebrated, and the 2025 Wine Companion released into the world.
This year, our Awards ceremony was held at Melbourne’s Ormond Hall at the Commons Collective back in early August, and unlike previous events which have felt a little more formal, we went hard on the party vibes. It’s been a tough couple of years for the wine industry and we wanted to give everyone a chance to catch up and let their hair down a little. It was a great night with lots of icons of the industry in attendance, including this year’s inductee into the Hall of Fame, Sue Hodder; sparkling guru Ed Carr; the teams from Yarra Valley high performers Giant Steps and Yarra Yering; and of course, our very own James Halliday.
James’ retirement makes the 2025 Wine Companion his last. So, while we begin our work on the 2026 edition with the same sense of optimism a new year usually brings, there’s a certain wistfulness, yet also pride at the opportunity to continue his legacy.
