Smeaton Estate

Janice and John Smeaton planted their Martin Hill vineyard to shiraz (6.5ha), sauvignon blanc (5.2ha), semillon (4.5ha), chardonnay (4ha), merlot (2.9ha), riesling (1.3ha) and pinot gris (0.6ha). They intended to sell the grapes, but a ’17 partnership with winemaker Con Moshos, an Adelaide Hills veteran with longstanding close ties to Brian Croser, got them started on riesling. That worked out rather well, and the estate range has since expanded to sauvignon blanc and merlot. -JAMES HALLIDAY
