The name reflects the changing nature of the Carpenter family’s activities. Over 40 years ago, Bob Carpenter gave up his job as a bank manager to move to McLaren Vale for farming activities. Son Paul graduated from the University of Adelaide and began his professional life as a cereal researcher for the university, but a vintage job at Geoff Merrill Wines at the end of his university studies led him to switch to winemaking. Over the next 20 years he worked both locally and internationally, in the Rhône Valley and Beaujolais and at Archery Summit in Oregon. Back in Australia he worked for Hardys and Wirra Wirra, and is currently senior winemaker at Hardys Tintara. Together with his partner Martine, he secures small parcels of outstanding grapes from 4 grower vineyards of grenache and shiraz. -JAMES HALLIDAY
