Our Review
The name Le Poidevin is derived from the French, literally meaning the weight of wine. Greg Le Poidevin's great-great-grandfather Daniel Le Poidevin emigrated from Guernsey, arriving in Adelaide in 1850; various generations of the family retained links to the wine industry, with Greg manifesting his as a devoted consumer during his 35 years as a lawyer. Just as I divorced my wife (law) and made my mistress (wine) my new wife, so did Greg Le Poidevin in 2005 when he obtained his producer's licence and severely curtailed his legal practice. He has established a virtual winery, sourcing the grapes for his white wine from the Adelaide Hills and the red wines from dry-grown vineyards in the Barossa Valley. A lifelong friendship with Barossa winemaker Trevor Jones has not only secured contract red winemaking of the highest standard, but also assisted in ferreting out small parcels of high quality fruit. In the outcome, the price of the wines has a most unlawyerly ring of modesty. -JAMES HALLIDAY
