Our Review
Moorilla Estate was the 2nd winery to be established in Tasmania in the 20th century, Jean Miguet’s La Provence beating it to the punch by 2 years. However, through much of the history of Moorilla Estate, it was the most important winery in the state. Magnificently situated on a mini-isthmus reaching into the Derwent River, it has always been a must-visit for wine lovers and tourists – much more so since the establishment of Mona, David Walsh’s wildly eccentric ancient and contemporary art museum. The combination of winery, underground museum, above-ground sculpture park, cellar door, wine bar and 2 restaurants (The Source and Faro) makes for one seriously fun cultural precinct. Production is around 160t/year, sourced entirely from the vineyards around Moorilla and its St Matthias Vineyard (Tamar Valley). -HALLIDAY TEAM
