Our Review
Julian Castagna became a major force in Australian wine in a very short time. He established Castagna in 1997 with his wife, Carolann, quickly making his name for premium quality led by his red wines, Genesis Syrah, La Chiave Sangiovese and Un Segreto, a blend of sangiovese and syrah which melds the winemaker’s birth in Italy and life in Australia. A true vigneron overseeing everything from the soil through to the bottle, his philosophy is founded along biodynamic principles, which he has embraced for 25 years. He is an original member of Renaissance des Appellations, started by noted French maker Nicolas Joly in 2003 and devoted to biodynamics as the pathway to a healthy planet. He was also an early and enthusiastic adopter of concrete eggs for the maturation of wine and their role in imparting an energetic freshness to wines. Son Adam joined the winemaking team in 2000, becoming assistant winemaker a year later and, in 2005, launched his own brand, Adam’s Rib.
