Our Review
In 2016, exactly two decades after Scott Ireland and Jen Lilburn established Provenance Wines in Geelong, Scott’s long-term associate winemaker Sam Vogel stepped up to join the business as a partner. In July 2024, Sam became the sole owner. As the name suggests, Provenance makes wines that speak of place. Fruit comes from eight vineyards across Geelong, Ballarat and Henty and, although some of the wines use fruit from more than one site, they mostly stay within their regions. The exception is the Golden Plains range which blends fruit from all three. Provenance is working towards organic certification in the vineyards, and as no animal products are used in winemaking, the wines are classified as vegan. The winery, housed inside the refurbished bluestone buildings of the old Fyansford Paper Mill on the banks of the Barwon River, is one of the country’s most beautiful, and includes a cellar door, function space and restaurant. -ANNA WEBSTER
