Our Review
Shane and Ali Clancey have turned a former potato paddock into a small, but very successful, wine business. In '02 Shane began planting a multi-clone pinot noir vineyard, plus a small planting of tempranillo. Basalt Wines’ grape intake is supplemented by a Drumborg vineyard, including 0.4ha of 26yo MV6 pinot noir and, even more importantly, riesling of the highest quality. Shane is viticulturist, assistant winemaker, wholesaler and runs the cellar door. Ali is involved in various parts of the business, including the small flock of babydoll sheep which graze next to the winery. -JAMES HALLIDAY
