Our Review
Port Phillip Estate’s wines are made at sibling winery Kooyong, but they have their own personality. If anything, the impressive cellar door – featuring both brands, a restaurant and luxury accommodation – at PPE makes it the show pony. While single-site chardonnay and pinot noir take centre stage, lately shiraz and more experimental styles, by conservative Mornington Peninsula standards, have impressed. Tim Perrin, who spent 7 years at Oakridge in the Yarra Valley, took over as chief winemaker at the start of '23 and is charged with crafting both Kooyong and PPE wines. -JAMES HALLIDAY

Information
The Cellar Door is the heart of Port Phillip Estate and the home of Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate wines. Its bold architecture, elegant tasting bar and spectacular views make it one of the most exciting cellar doors in Australia.
The Port Phillip Estate vineyard was established in 1987. Situated in Red Hill, the vineyard is planted on deep red loam soils of volcanic origin. Set in a natural amphi-theatre on north and east-facing slopes the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc.
The nearby Kooyong vineyard and winery was established in 1995. Its location in Tuerong, toward the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, is warmer, drier and more protected. The north-facing vineyard has well drained, low vigor sedimentary soils. The majority of the site is planted to Pinot Noir, with areas of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
Our wines are entirely estate grown and produced and strongly reflect the vineyard site attributes. The low fertility, sedimentary, light sandy clays of Kooyong support tannic, savoury wines while the deeper, redder and more friable volcanic soils of the cooler and higher Port Phillip Estate vineyard highlight attractive aromatics and lift.
