Our Review
Owner Ben Portet is the 10th-generation winemaker in the Portet family, father Dominique (for many years in charge of Taltarni) and uncle Bernard (long-serving winemaker at Clos Duval in the Napa Valley) members of the ninth generation. Ben has a winemaking background second to none, building on his degree in oenology from Adelaide University with four vintages at Petaluma (while completing his university studies), thereafter Bordeaux (Chateau Beychevelle), Champagne (Louis Roederer), the Rhone Valley (M. Chapoutier), Stellenbosch (Warwick Estate) and the Napa Valley (Vineyard 29). His ‘day job' is assisting his father at Dominique Portet (see separate entry). Ten Men is undergoing a hiatus while Ben's children are young. -JAMES HALLIDAY
