If you're a fan of Hunter Valley semillon, mark Tuesday September 13 in your calendar. It's the day Mount Pleasant will release its 2017 Cellar Aged Lovedale Semillon, along with a suite of other whites.
"Containing a complex nose highlighting perfectly balanced bottle aged and fruit characters, a lively fresh palate with ripe citrus notes, fine acidity and a long lingering finish. This wine will cellar to be a definitive example of the classic Hunter semillon style," Chief Winemaker Adrian Sparks says.
The annual Mount Pleasant white wine collection is available on September 13.
The release includes four expressions: the 2017, the 2022 Lovedale Semillon (exclusive to members), the 2017 Elizabeth Semillon, and the 2022 Estate Semillon. Each were produced from the Lovedale Vineyard, which was originally planted in 1946 by pioneer Maurice O'Shea. Adrian says this release comes off the back of an almost perfect growing season.
Rounding out the suite is the 2021 Estate Grown Hunter Valley Fiano, the 2021 Estate Grown Chardonnay and the 2022 Estate Grown Hunter Valley Rosé.
Mount Pleasant was founded in 1921 by Maurice O'Shea, and has since developed a reputation for outstanding wines that are produced from its historic sites. In its centenary year, Mount Pleasant was purchased by the Medich Family Office. Since, the homestead has undergone a complete renovation and the cellar door has been reopened to include a private tasting room, member lounge and a one-of-a-kind wine store.
2017 Mount Pleasant Cellar Aged Lovedale Semillon
Pale straw in colour, intense citrus and lemongrass on the nose, combined with bottle age characters of lanolin and toast. Concentrated fruits of lemon and lime on the palate with beautiful acidity driving through to showcase the amazing length of this wonderful, aged style.Once at the winery the semillon was destemmed and pressed off skins to stainless steel tank. Here the juice was cold settled bright before being racked off, warmed, and inoculated for ferment. The juice was fermented with specific neutral yeast strain chosen to promote the vineyard specific flavours, and fermentation was conducted at cold temperatures to retain the delicate flavours. Following fermentation, the wines were settled, blended and gently fined before being filtered to bottle.
