The widely renowned Budburst Festival is set for another year of wine tasting and more, showcasing the best the region has to offer, across a two-day celebration this coming November.
During the festival, guests can discover the hidden treasures of the region, learn from the locals, and understand why the Macedon Ranges' food and wine scene is so celebrated.
Over 30 wineries will be opening their doors to share the diverse wine styles of the region, and here, we find out what else the festival has to offer.
We speak with Howard Matthews, president of the Macedon Ranges Vignerons Associations, on the years that have been and also what's to come.
What is Budburst Festival?
On November 9 and 10, between 10am and 5pm, over 30 of our wineries will open for the Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Budburst Festival, so guests can explore and experience the diversity of wine styles grown and made across this outstanding cool-climate winemaking region. A Festival Passport ticket allows you access across the weekend to all venues for wine tastings, live entertainment and good old-fashioned country hospitality.
How has Budburst Festival evolved over the years?
From small beginnings, Budburst Festival has grown into an event that now attracts around 2000 to 3000 people over the weekend. Visitors are enthusiastically using the bus services provided, as well as a hop-on, hop-off bus shuttle. A Festival Passport with each ticket provides information on all participating wineries.
How does Budburst Festival foster a sense of community?
As most of our wineries are small and family-owned, the festival offers a personalised experience to learn first-hand from some of Victoria’s best artisans of wine. Festival visitors can talk directly with the people who grew the grapes, and made the wine. We are on the road less travelled, and yet still less than an hour from Melbourne
How else can visitors enjoy the Macedon Ranges when attending the Budburst Festival?
There is the iconic Hanging Rock with its wonderful views; great eating spots in Piper Street, Kyneton; terrific public golf courses; B&Bs in every town; many trails and paths to wander; Mount Macedon’s lovely gardens; Daylesford galleries and boutiques; and even spas at Lancefield!
What keeps Budburst festival going year after year?
People are continuing to discover the Macedon Ranges wine region, especially being so close to Melbourne. Most producers are boutique, family-owned and lovingly producing signature wines, some using age-old techniques. As a result, we offer wine that is limited in quantity, and exceptionally high in quality. With 21 varieties being grown, next-generation winemakers making their mark, and a number of vineyards approaching 40 years of age, there is a lot to like about the Macedon Ranges.
