25 Riverland wines to try

South Australia's Riverland is the largest winegrowing region in Australia. But the region is at breaking point. With prices for grapes plunging to rates from 50 years ago. Growers are being offered $120 per tonne of grapes, which doesn't even cover half the production costs.

And as vintage '24 kicks into gear, the region is asking for financial help from the government in the form of $300 per tonne. Amanda Dimas, who owns a vineyard with her husband in Renmark, started the petition 'Save Riverland wine' last week. It's already garnered over 700 signatures – you can sign it here.

Amanda says the "glut of red wine is currently the main problem, followed by the high volume of red vines planted and not enough white varieties." The petition notes that grape growers and farmers are struggling to pay bills, and are at risk of losing their homes and businesses.

Last year, Riverland's harvest contributed to more than one third of the country's total grape crush. While the region isn't alone in their struggle, it has been hit the hardest.
