Australia has well and truly put sparkling shiraz on the map. While we can't technically claim shiraz as our own, we can claim our spin on the sparkling red wine. If you're wondering when is the best time to enjoy some of the best Australian sparkling shiraz, well, think spring barbecues, laying by the pool on a summer day, brunch, and special occasions like Christmas lunch.
When it comes to sparkling shiraz food pairing, you can match a glass of fizz to breakfast favourites like omelettes and danishes. Going to a Chinese restaurant that's BYO? Take a bottle of sparkling shiraz and order peking duck pancakes and sticky barbecue pork. Sunday arvo barbecue? Lamb chops! You can even serve sparkling shiraz with curry. And, as we're sure you've guessed, pretty much anything with chocolate is an ideal dessert pairing.
This list includes 22 of the best sparkling shiraz wines – you'll find one of the most well-known examples in Seppelt – the 2012 Seppelt Show Sparkling Limited Release Shiraz has scored 96 points. Greenock Creek Wines' 2019 Sparkling Shiraz comes from old-vine Marananga shiraz. Dave Brookes says it finishes "long and like liquid Christmas cake."
Coming in at under $50 is Teusner's 2018 MC Sparkling Shiraz, which is a special wine for Dave, who was working at the winery when the first vintage was released. "Try it with Christmas ham too, but you already know that. It's a ripper." Toni Paterson MW reviews Taltarni's 2020 Sparkling Shiraz, which she says is "a beautifully made wine that typifies this much-loved Australian style." It's $30.
